She had a College Degree, and she had taught. To causes that were very important to her work veterans and soldiers and also orphans. Children who had been made orphans as a result of the civil war. She combined all these roles, that is the

So this should give a bit of context to where the Womens Movement is coming into play as we work through some of these overview issues. Now, the 60s as much promise as there was, we also know there was a lot of issues. Particularly racial issues. But it was a period of great change, warfare, and for those who did find promise in the 1960s, there were those who didnt get access to that. And so there are a number of individuals and groups fighting for access. So we have the 1967 detroit riots. A series of political assassinations. Jfk in 1963. In 1968 you also have the assassinations of Martin Luther king jr. And bobby kennedy. So theres also a lot of fear about what this change means and a lot of people are reacting to that. Focusing on jfk because were going to be talking most about women in the Civil Rights Movement today, well be focusing on other womens experiences on wednesday. But to give you
My honor the convene this plenary, and when we were planning the conference, we always liked to bring our heavy hitters out. And i think that today is one of those occasions, in which we have a collection of fine scholars and activists here to address the theme. So what we are, and what we have decided to do is to run the plenary more as a round table, and the moderated conversation about the issues with the great migration, and i wanted to introduce our panelists, and give them an opportunity to speak for a few minutes as far as their own work and perceptions and ideas about the great migration, and then move on to the question and answer followed by a discussion with us, and followed by a question and answer session with the audience. The first panelist is joe trotter who is a giant history professor and prior with the Carnegie Mellon center in pittsburgh, and previously the president of the africanamerican studies in the urban life and economy
