JMCSS says JCM students to get in school by August, not 45-day plan

School system still aiming for August open date at JCM

Making deadline on JCM, Madison another tall hurdle for Crocker

Making deadline on JCM, Madison another tall hurdle for Crocker | Opinion View Comments Remember April of 2020 when the Jackson-Madison County School Board, the Madison County Commission and the Jackson City Council got together for ceremonial ground-breakings at Jackson-Central Merry and University of Memphis at Lambuth campuses? It was an unusual time because the COVID-19 pandemic had just shut schools and large gatherings down, but the school board had just hired Marlon King as its next superintendent, and he was nearly three months away from taking over the district’s leadership. A good number of people showed up for the ceremonies, and it was a nice symbolic time as King posed for photos with former superintendent Eric Jones and the interim between Jones and King, Ray Washington – kind of a past, present, future kind of thing.

Partnership, grant to build affordable housing around new schools

View Comments The development company responsible for two school projects currently underway will be a partner in the affordable housing construction and neighborhood revitalization in the areas around those schools, thanks to a grant and multi-agency collaboration. In early 2021, Healthy Community, LLC submitted a $1 million grant proposal to build affordable homes around the renovated 6-12 Jackson Central-Merry High and the new Madison Academic High, both of which Healthy Community is overseeing as construction crews work overtime to finish for their August openings. The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) has approved the grant through the Southwest Community Development Corporation even though THDA is still in the final stages of the grant process.
