Duval, Rosenberg, Sommer vie for two open seats on Adams Select Board

ADAMS There are three candidates for two open Select Board seats to be decided at the May 3 town election. ¶ They are incumbent John Duval, and challengers Howard Rosenberg and Donald Sommer. John Duval Duval is seeking his fourth term on the Select Board, having served on it for the past nine years. He previously served on the School Committee for 17 years, and is the vice chairman of the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission. “I really enjoy working with the Select Board and town residents to make Adams a better town,” Duval said. He said the main challenge that the town faces at present is to come out of the coronavirus pandemic with an accurate inventory of businesses that have failed because of COVID-19 and those that survived, so town officials can get started on economic recovery.

Haflinger Haus gets a little creative with new dining pods

ADAMS — As the weather got colder, Haflinger Haus Restaurant Tavern & Inn owner Don Sommer knew he needed to get creative and heat things up to keep his business going.  All restaurant business is down due to the pandemic, he said in a recent phone interview. Last summer, we invested in new patio furniture [for outside dining]. As it got colder, we added propane heaters and it helped business. However, as the weather got even colder, business fell. We went to the Cape, Scargo Cafe in Dennis, where they have dining huts. We had dinner in a hut and thought it might be a good idea for us.

Selling one church to fix another to house music academy in Adams

ADAMS — The Berkshires Academy for Advanced Musical Studies is the proud owner of two churches; the problem is, it only needs one. So, the academy, which was given the former First Baptist Church this summer, has put its current home, the former St. Mark’s Church, on the market. Don Sommer, one of the organizers, emphasized that the academy was not closing; activities eventually will move to the new space just down the street. “The Baptist church is much more conducive to a performance and music venue,” Sommer said. “It’s going to make a perfect concert space.” The academy purchased St. Mark’s, at 39 Commercial St., in December 2019 for $150,000, and then spent an additional $125,000 on refurbishing the structure and renewing the heating system.

If you ve driven down Route 8 in Adams you ve likely noticed the dining huts on the Haflinger Haus front porch. The folks at Haflinger Haus remind them of the Christmas Market Huts in Austria!
