MHRC opens complaints handling centers in Kasungu using NICE structures

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has joined hands with National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) by establishing complaints handling structures in Kasungu District to enable every to speed up process when people want to access justice. MHRC executive secretary Habiba Osman told the media in Kasungu that the complaints handling structures will be across the district using already existence NICE structures. Osman: Executive Secretary for MHRC and former expert on anti violence against women and girls Osman said they decided to take this course following their findings that showed that many Malawians living in remote areas are unable to access justice.

Malawi media joins World Association of News Publishers on World Press Freedom Day

Its role is to bring local media professionals together to find common solutions. In celebrating World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, Malawi Media Freedom Committee has been accepted as a chapter for World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) a regional and global network of media professionals which is committed to standing for quality journalism and press freedom while respecting diversity and plurality of voices. Malawi Media Freedom Committee was formed some weeks ago at the suggestion of WAN-IFRA itself, as disclosed by current chairperson Gracian Tukula. MISA Malawi on a freedom march in Blantyre-(c) Abel Ikiloni, Mana Tukula leads the committee of Mbauwo Chavula as secretary, Josephine Phumisa as treasurer with other members being Francis Tayanjah Phiri, Emmanuel Chibwana, Chisomo Ngulube and Habiba Osman.

MHRC Faults Chakwera For Interdicting Public Officers Over Covidgate

The Malawi human Rights Commission (MHRC) has faulted President Lazarus Chakwera for ordering that interdicted public officers in the 6.2 billion kwacha COVID-19 funds abuse scandal should not be receiving their pay. In a statement, the Commission’s Executive Secretary Habiba Osman says the decision has no legal basis and should be aborted. The Commission further questions why Co-Chairpersons of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 have been left scot-free yet they were overseeing procurement of personal protective equipment. Again, MHRC demands that other investigations be conducted on some Covid funds apart from the 6.2 billion kwacha. After the National Audit Office (NAO) released a report on how Covid-19 funds were used, Chakwera ordered that all public officers whose name are in the report be interdicted without pay.

The initiative has been awarded with the Commonwealth Points of Light award, says a statement from the British High Commission in Malawi. The Commonwealth Points of Light awards are made by Queen Elizabeth II, as Head of the Commonwealth, to thank inspirational volunteers across the 53 Commonwealth nations for the difference they are making in their communities and beyond.

Malawi Supreme Court Outlaws Death Penalty; labels it unconstitutional

“This is victory for justice and constitutionalism.” Malawi’s highest court, The Supreme Court of Appeal this week Wednesday outlawed the death penalty labelling it unconstitutional and ordered the re-sentencing of all convicts facing the hangman’s execution. The court determined in the ruling that “the death penalty, since it is a derogation from the right to life, is impermissible” under the nation’s constitution.” “The essence of the right to life is life itself the sanctity of life. The right to life is the mother of all rights. Without the right to life other rights do not exist,” ruled the court.
