The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has commended the Malawi Police Service for acting swiftly in arresting people involved in the murder of a 26 year old person with albinism in Mangochi.
In a statement seen by this publication, MHRCâs Executive Secretary Habiba Osman said the police moved in quickly to arrest the culprits, a gesture to be recognized.
According to Osman, the Commission received the devastating news of disappearance of Said Futon Dayton, a person with albinism who was hailing from Kadewere Village in the district.
âThe Commission would like to commend the Malawi Police Service (MPS) for their quick response to the matter where three suspects have since been arrested,â Osman said.
Government is working together with Ministry of Justice and enforcement agencies in conclusion of 169 albinism cases in different courts across the country.
Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati Tuesday disclosed the development in Lilongwe during a Media briefing on condemning the attack of Saidi Futon Dayton, 26, with albinism from Kadewere Village in Mangochi.
âMinistry will conclude all albinism cases as soon as possible including those that are affecting high profile people in the country. We also requesting the Judiciary to move with speed in concluding these cases,â she said.
Kaliati encouraged community members in the country to report such cases to their relevant authorities such as police, traditional leaders, community policing and among others so that they can assist the government in fighting against these malpractices.

MHRC Calls For PPEs For All
The Malawi Human Rights Commission MHRC has called on the government to consider providing personal protective equipment to all Malawians regardless of age.
MHRC Executive Secretary Habiba Osman told Zodiak yesterday that much as the human rights body appreciates the new preventive guidelines, government should make sure that the rights to education and life should be safeguarded at all times in the midst of the global pandemic. Every person must have access to PPEs regardless of age, status, sex, and everything else, Osman said.

Late Nyondo was a student at The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, who was staying in Chitawira Township from where he was attending weekend classes.
He was shot dead in Blantyre on the night of December 31 2020 when he was on his way to overnight prayers at Robin’s Park.
