Quorum call quorum call . Mr. Cardin madam president. The presiding officer the senator from maryland. Mr. Cardin thank you, madam president. I ask unanimous consent that the dwoark be dispensed with. The presiding officer that the quorum call be dispensed with. The presiding officer without objection. Mr. Cardin madam president , in february of this year, the house of representatives passed whats known as the universal background check in regards to gun sales. Since that time, the senate has had no action whatsoever on gun safety issues. Leader mcconnell could bring this bill to the floor, and i am confident that we have the support to pass it. I do hear from many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle that were waiting for the president , and unless the president signs off on a bill, they are not interested in bringing it up. Well, the last time i checked the constitution of the United States, the first article of the constitution provides for the legislative branch of gover
Congratulations on your book the first time you told me about it it does seem like there is anger out there so im glad you took the time to do that. One thing that strikes me as a journalist that you operate like a reporter. Why do you do your books that way when you are out and about . I appreciate that. I want to be out and about i dont want to sit and manipulate numbers but i have found the interviews are revealing particularly with people that i dont understand but i actually didnt start this book thinking i would go through a different user group. But the chapter on the extreme white line right wing they are so wired and have so many websites i figured i could do most of it on the internet. So i would go on to these chat rooms and hear people talking but there would be eight people and saying all the horrible things. Theres eight here and for our students in anthropology. One is a High School Kid goofing around. And two are real and one is like me. I cant tell who was who. You can
Laws. It would establish a Grant Program to encourage states to adopt laws so that courts can take firearms from people who ,re suspected of being a danger and this has some republican support not only in the house but in the senate and President Trump has also said that he would support this type of thing. That bill also allows federal courts to issue these kind of protective orders. There were two other bills, one that would outlaw large capacity magazines and other ammunition feeding devices. Democrats will talk about how some of these shootings were only stopped when the shooter had to reload and that some of these shooters used magazines that could hold up to 100 rounds , meaning they would not have to reload very often. Another one that would prevent people another bill that would prevent people who had been convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime from owning a weapon. Currently, felons are prevented from owning a weapon, and this would add to that by saying if it is a misdemeanor
The presiding officer the senator from connecticut. Mr. Murphy are we in a quorum call, mr. President . The presiding officer we are not. Mr. Murphy thank you, mr. President. Mr. President , i thank my colleagues for their indulgence this evening, and for those of us those of you who help us keep this floor open. I will make some longer remarks later this evening, but while we have a short break in the floor waiting for senator brown to arrive, i wanted to say a word of appreciation to all of my colleagues who have decided to join us this evening on the floor. This is my first appearance here, to talk about the imperative of changing the nations gun laws, recognizing that this number, 100 americans killed by guns every single day, is not inevitable. Almost every single one of these murders and suicides and accidental shootings is preventable. If we make different choices here on the floor of the United States senate, and our purpose tonight is to try to bring some consistency of effort
Pelosi held a briefing on gun violence. They urged Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell to bring up a housepast background check bill. This briefing is just over half an [indiscernible conversation] hour. Here we go. Senator schumer welcome. Hi. Great. Ok, lets get started. Im very proud to be joined by, of course, my friend and colleague, Speaker Pelosi, mayor nan whaley from dayton. Good to have you here. And i want to thank my colleagues senators brown and stabenow and representative escobar from el paso, texas and representative thompson. Too Many Americans are losing their lives to gun violence. Too many families are just weeping because they have lost loved ones. I was at the airport today.
