there are folks who say, look, you know what are we going to do abts addressing some of the problems when you talk about mental illness or the fact that some of these existing gun laws don t really enforce them. do they address that in any way these gun owners expanding these background checks? could that do anything to kind of solve some of the other issues out there? very, very important. arguably, suzanne, one has nothing to do with the other. the check is a good idea. if you want to do checks, obviously check as many different types of sales as possible. but remember this, it is an odd situation where our first step what we re saying is the most important fix is to go after the good guys, people who want to buy guns lawfully. a big part of the resistance here is not only do we already have extensive checks as you saw in the piece, and that doesn t even include state and city and other municipalities that put on checks, but that most crime is done within a legally obtained weapon.
for prosecutors to file charges against parents who don t secure dangerous weapons in their homes. pamela, we appreciate it. guns, it s the third leading cause of death for kids between the ages of 5 and 14. and of course this begs the question, what about the parents? do they need to do more? later we re going to talk this hour about what parents can do, if they can do anything, to keep their kids safe. and the idea behind background checks on gun purchases, well, this is pretty simple to keep guns out of the hands overpeople who shouldn t have them including mentally ill. most don t know what is involved in the process, how easy is it or difficult to actually get a gun? chris cuomo, he walks us through it. i m looking for home protection shotgun. okay. i m going to bring you down to our shotgun section. seems simple. but there s more to it than you might think. every purchase from a licensed
we got a bit after preview from senate majority leader harry reid. senator leahy was very, very expansive and in talking about the hearings he is going to have on gun control. it is very clear that there is going to be a bill brought out of the committee, brought to the senate floor and there will be amendment process there. the people bring up whatever amendments they want that deals with this issue. reporter: so harry reid saying it out saying there will be legislation to come out of this committee. the question is what kind of legislation precisely. whether trying to stop gun trafficking. whether it will be background checks. it is not clear how far they think they will go to get something across the finish line, bill. bill: it appeared a week ago, harry reid wasn t quite sure he didn t want to put his senate democrats on the record votings on this, given 20 are up for re-election in the year 2014. it will be interesting to watch that. what are leading republicans saying before
negotiates where the two sides have to reconcile their differences in what they call a conference. this is the way this place is supposed to work not via press, but makers toking. things that are bad for our economy they won t have the support of republicans but they have enough votes to pass a budget from the senate, and both side will have to negotiate to come up with a final package. bill: if there is no final package and no agreement do you agree with paul ryan the sequestration will take effect. that will happen by law. i think what paul ryan is saying is right. that is scheduled to happen unless something keeps it from happening. if there is no agreement between the two sides it s going to automatically happen. it s not good nor our national defense, it s not really the best way to balance our budget but in the absence of no action that s exactly what is going to happen. bill: with the budget and the debt ceiling and the immigration push that becomes a pretty crowded calendar.
better. and that we can do it better. because the special interest issues we were talking about that we all shook our heads abili about, a lot are still in the bill. what s wrong with spending money if it winds of raising taxes on multimillionaires, millionaires or people earning more than $250,000 a year if it s going to give access to 30 million americans who don t have to worry about getting sick. what s wrong with that? there s nothing wrong with that. more importantly it does raise taxes and it does raise taxes for people who are earning less. it s going to affect businesses. as i said before, i have felt as we did in massachusetts, we provide almost 98% of our people with insurance. individual states would like to have that right to do the same thing and ask the federal government how can you help us do that? can you insent vise us to do it better? maybe they ll do it better than massachusetts and get costs under control. but there s one size fits all plan really hurting busi
