mcconnell, absolutely correctly, transfer that to harry reid. i think that things are off to a very good start. i just hope everybody stays real. this lip service to you know bipartisanship we re not going to be deadlocked or gridlocked in washington you know let s see what happens. it s part of the process. let s return the rules of regular order and let s go. harris while harry reid wasn t the most energetic individual or enthusiastic he was enthusiastic when it came to blocking the bills that the house would send him so he was covered for president obama. now obama doesn t have that cover but you notice the rhetoric is different from republicans. john was saying we want to work together. isn t that because the polling showed the american people this last election really want them to work together or at least pretend they re working together? i happen to believe that politicians probably do look at the polling, yes.
begin with. now, i think if you look at where senior citizens are with medicare, which is a single payer system, most americans want a little bit of that action. so you say dirty little secret. it s only a because the media has not been reporting on it. this is a step in the right direction. hold on obama care is a step in the right direction but what about a step the reason it s a dirty little secret it wasn t sold the long-term plan was going to be a single payer system, medicare, medicaid. it wasn t sold that way because president obama wasn t behind it, harry reid wasn t behind it, but very far people on the left wanted a single payer system, like me, i say yummy, yummy. okay. and most americans hold on a little of that [ inaudible ]. very good point. makes a very good point. on the far left they want single payer, socialized medicine pure
a deal done as did harry reid. i think both of them are experienced, wiley, tough negotiators, wolf. and they let the house, they watched the and theics in the house and when john boehner couldn t get anything done, i think they were a little surprised at what the occurred but then they decided okay, we ve got to step in now because we re at the precipice of something really catastrophic and can t let this happen. it s interesting, the last time we went through this kind of fiscal crisis averting the fiscal cliff, mitch mcconnell was very much involved in a last-minute deal. that time it was the vice president, joe biden who represented the democrats and worked out the deal with him. harry reid came on board afterwards. this time harry reid really wanted to take charge. harry reid wasn t happy with that deal in 2011. looking back on it, i don t think the president was very happy with it either. he didn t like the sequesters that came as a result and so i
will never go away. so we need to be careful how we accomplish this annihilation. what about putting all the resources and energy towards something else, like the next elections, get back the senate or the white house. that s what we re seeing. the consequence. and i think priorities for republicans should be messaging. the reason that republicans are getting blamed for the shutdown is because they didn t message properly initially. they should have explained the shutdown, explained what harry reid wasn t willing to do in terms of negotiation. you have to lead on offense, not defense, and that s the way you win arguments. win on messaging would have put them in a better spot. i have to run. i appreciate the conversation. it was a good one. a new scare in the air as pilots warn of terror dry runs.
we got a bit after preview from senate majority leader harry reid. senator leahy was very, very expansive and in talking about the hearings he is going to have on gun control. it is very clear that there is going to be a bill brought out of the committee, brought to the senate floor and there will be amendment process there. the people bring up whatever amendments they want that deals with this issue. reporter: so harry reid saying it out saying there will be legislation to come out of this committee. the question is what kind of legislation precisely. whether trying to stop gun trafficking. whether it will be background checks. it is not clear how far they think they will go to get something across the finish line, bill. bill: it appeared a week ago, harry reid wasn t quite sure he didn t want to put his senate democrats on the record votings on this, given 20 are up for re-election in the year 2014. it will be interesting to watch that. what are leading republicans saying before
