The ghost in the archives #4: Searching for that rainbow at the end of conformity – The Echo

The art of the peaceful protest has been a staple of Byron Shire life since the ‘new settlers’ arrived in the 1970s, searching for that rainbow at the end of conformity. It has taken on elements of theatre and of humour, often expressed through costume, dance, music and that ubiquitous medium, face-painting. In 1991, as well as protests against indiscriminate government logging mentioned in Archive #2, some 400 people took to the streets of Byron Bay in January to protest against ‘the current crisis in the Persian Gulf’. In a strongly-worded statement that did not mention names but was clearly directed at the UAE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lashed out at the Emirati regime for destabilisation in the region and supporting insurrections. “We, therefore, deplore and warn against some of the misinformed and misleading statements that disregard facts and at times appear to be supporting insurrection, from some quarters, that are well known for their unceremonious acts in the region, falsely posing as the master of another nation’s future, in contradiction of the norms and principles of international law,” the statement read in part.

Somalia: Interim Government Whitewashes its Role Blaming UAE, Candidates for Electoral Stalemate, and Violence

In a press conference he held at his office, the Somalia Minister for Information directly blamed the United Arab Emirates for encouraging insurrection and use of violence re-igniting fresh tensions between the two countries. Minister Osman Dubbe responded angrily to a statement the UAE released decrying excessive use of force during the Friday clashes between the interim Somalia government and protesters supporting the Union of Presidential Candidates who previously declared non-recognition of a government whose mandated term expired. The opposition, as a result, demanded that they had no confidence in another attempt to revive an electoral process led by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo as they blamed him for its failure in the first place.
