In a statement, Jawhar Sircar, Sudheendra Kulkarni, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and others called on the government to revoke the early release of the convicts, saying that it "sets a precedent that is inhuman and immoral".
On August 25, the top court had sought responses from the Union government and the Gujarat government to a petition challenging the remission granted to the 11 convicts in the case.
"This is an irony. Our prime minister spoke of women empowerment, and the state from where he comes, released these men, who gang-raped a helpless woman," the former high court judge said.
'My sorrow and my wavering faith is not for myself alone but for every woman who is struggling for justice in courts. I appeal to the Gujarat Government to undo this harm. Give me back my right to live without fear and in peace. Please ensure that my family and I are kept safe'
