The Fitment Committee of goods and services tax (GST) Council has recommended exempting powdered millet from GST when sold in loose form, with 70% millet content. The fitment committee, which comprises revenue officials from both the Centre and states also deferred decision on imposing uniform cess on cigarettes and bidi, as the industry said that the current cess system is not uniform.
The amendments also make registration mandatory for offshore e-gaming companies operating in India. It also provides for blocking of access in case offshore platforms fail to comply with GST registration and tax payment norms.
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will meet on October 7 to discuss the reconstitution of the group of ministers on rate rationalization and review the progress made by states in incorporating changes related to the taxation of online gaming in their GST laws. Last month, amendments were made to the Central GST and Integrated GST laws to clarify the 28% levy on bets in online gaming, casinos, and horse race clubs. Offshore e-gaming companies operating in India are now required to register and comply with GST norms.
GST Council meet: The GST Council is expected to shed light on what would constitute online gaming for the purpose of taxing and whether games of skill or chance would be included in the definition.
