The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge pay tribute to Prince Philip with Air Cadet engagement

22nd April 2021 The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge returned to royal duties with a visit to the 282 (East Ham) Squadron Air Cadets to pay tribute to Prince Philip who’d been Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Cadets for 63 years. The 282 Squadron consists of more than 60 members who are learning skills and gaining qualifications in aviation, cyber and radio communications, adventure training, music, First Aid, air experience flying, gliding and space courses. As well, the Cadets have also undertaken international trips to refurbish schools, teach English classes, and participate in rainforest conservation efforts. During their visit, William and Kate watched as the Cadets gave three cheers in tribute to the late Duke of Edinburgh.

The couple smiled proudly as cadets raised their hats and gave a rousing three cheers in memory of Prince Philip. The Royal family remains in mourning following the Duke s death but the Queen gave the Cambridges special permission to visit the C282 (East Ham) Squadron in East London, in honour of her husband.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined air cadets honouring the memory of the Duke of Edinburgh as they held their first joint public event since his death. William and Kate met young people learning life skills with the Air Training Corps, and the duchess tested her aerial skills in a flight simulator. The duke, who learnt to fly with the RAF and piloted the service’s search and rescue helicopters, joked “I’ll hold the handbag” and stood back with his wife’s clutch as she got to grips with the controls. Kate shared a laugh with William – who wore a black tie as a mark of respect to his grandfather – as she clambered into the simulator, at 282 (East Ham) Squadron, Air Training Corps in east London, and then put on a headset.
