can barely see the skyline there. really appreciate it. great to be with you, john. thank you. john: good news, ground stop has been lifted at laguardia, now just a ground delay. but departures, anybody travelling to new york, expect an almost two-hour delay on average in the flight. sandra: this is really something and we were noting in the backdrop of nate foy s report, how the lights have now come on in central park because of how dark this is. the cover of the new york post right now is dark city, and as far as air pollution rankings, new york city is now among the world s worst at this moment from these canadian wildfires. back to nate foy, trying to grab some folks on the ground there. what are people saying? well, people are concerned, sandra, and we have talked about the ground stops at laguardia and newark international airport
the pilot said, hey, you know, we ve got low visibility, but we re still able to land. the flight operations at dca. i know at some airports there have been ground stops for a period of time. explain to folks how much this affects operations. doesn t stop them entirely, but we re going to see the ripple effect here not just in the areas where the smoke is, but this is actually having a nationwide impact on flights. the ground stop at laguardia just ended. it switched to a ground delay how long was the ground stop? the ground stop was in place until about 2:00 p.m. how many hours top of the hour. lasted about an hour. the ground stop is for a while. i m looking at the numbers from the faa, average delay 119 minutes, gjust shy of two hours. that s flights bound to laguardia. departing laguardia delay good 30 minutes according to the faa. is the goal to put more space? the issue is the visibility.
it s especially bad in new york. just talked to a passenger on a flight from new orleans into newark. he said you could smell the smoke in the plane as the flight descended into newark. you could see that thick red smoke, he said it was almost apocalyptic. the ground stop at newark and laguardia, both of them have been lift. at newark, there lifted. at newark, there is a ground delay meaning flights held at the departing airport up to two hours now. at laguardia, about 45 minutes. so things are improving a little bit, although we are not out of the woods just yet. we see during days when there are major delays like this a bit of a domino effect, and so this could mean that this wildfire smoke having an impact on the east coast could have a nationwide impact on commercial air tramp. just checked flight aware, we just crossed 2,000 delays nationwide. the good news right now, though,
coastal flooding across the northeast. we do expect that it s going to come back with a vengeance, as a front comes through and pushes everything out, the wind is going to pick. up we have about 2 to 3 inches falling every hour. parts of new york and new jersey are both under a state of emergency. this could be a foot of snow. so, this is a meaningful storm. new york state department of transportation doing what it can to keep the roads clear. first of all, always keep an eye on the weather. don t drive if you don t have to. when there is weather, you ve got to give yourself more time. a delta airlines airbus partially, quote, accident of a taxiway at a syracuse airport, according to the company. delta did not confirm if the incident was storm related. however, winter weather did cause a ground delay at laguardia airport through the day. so, one day after, another hopefully, we re not stuck overnight. hundreds of thousands of people are without power across the northe
