welcome. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and watching around the world now at the top of the hour. it is our continuing coverage of the boston marathon tragedy. i m anderson cooper live near the scene, a couple of blocks away. american airlines has grounded all of its flights. they say this is due to troubles with its reservation system. there is no reported link between this mass grounding and the boston bombings investigation. we re trying to get more information. american airlines handled an average of 3400 flights per day with a quarter of a million passengers. obviously this is a huge story that will affect people traveling around the country. the airline says the system wide ground delay will be in effect until 5:00 p.m. eastern. we also want to get you updated on the latest developments in the bombing here in boston. here is what we know at this hour. federal law enforcement official tells cnn that a timer was likely used to activate the bomb and they were no
yesterday s 300 canceled flights. you can imagine the ripple effect across the country. i want to show you the terminal behind me. you can get a better idea of how many people. it slowed down now, but it has been packed, jam packed since we got here at 4:30 this morning. 60 canceled flights, 20 minute ground delay, 300 canceled flights yesterday and still here in philadelphia, 230 stranded passengers. as you can imagine, the ripple effect from these weather delays has gone across the globe. i spoke with a man from south korea here in philadelphia this morning. he was diverted and delayed at three different cities and several of the people who are here this morning are telling me they re trying to catch trains or rent cars, so they don t have to deal with the mess in the airport. so many of the flights are already booked to capacity here today in philadelphia because of the holiday season that a lot of the travelers who were delayed yesterday are trying to figure out how they re going t

the thanksgiving holiday. whether you re lining up in the airports or prepping the car for a ride home, expect weather delays. a line of storms could bring plenty of rain from the great lakes to the gulf coast. some of that rain may change into snow showers. karen maginnis will join us in 20 minutes on the weather trouble spots. republican presidential candidate newt gingrich picks up an important endorsement from new hampshire s largest newspaper. today s edition of the union leader says the former house speaker is by no means the perfect contender, but calls him the best candidate who is actually running. right now, back to our top story. lori fine, wife of syracuse university associate head basketball coach, bernie fine, may have been aware of her husband s alleged inappropriate acts with children. espn s outside the lines released audio tape given to them by bobby davis, the man who has publicly accused the coach of years of molestation. in the tape mrs. fine says a
weather which has been worse across minnesota and wisconsin. as much as 10 inches of snow coming down, and starting to get reports out of pennsylvania, as much as 8 inches of snow here. take a look at this live picture. that s supposed to be new york city. and every now and then you can see a couple of those snow flakes flying, 34 degrees, really no accumulate couple hou. really bad on traffic. that commute we re getting reports of the tunnel with major jam factors going on there. we have stronger thunderstorms associated with this. that will trigger the dry line. thunderstorms will hold together throughout the ohio valley today and then become severe later in the day. we do have some airport issues. chicago o hare everybody who is sitting in the airports somewhere else trying to get into o hare right now is looking at a 45-minute ground delay. it will be a while before things clear up there. we re expecting delays in new york city over an hour. very likely and newark and philadelphia
