The Congress government in Karnataka has launched the third of its five poll guarantee schemes, called "Gruha Jyothi", offering up to 200 units of free power to 2.14 crore eligible consumers. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Congress national President Mallikarjun Kharge criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi who accused the Karnataka government of "emptying" state coffers through such schemes.
