Fox Chapel’s Elizabeth Schwrtzman pulls down a rebound over Plum’s Dannika Susko Thursday Jan. 28, 2021 High School.
The Fox Chapel girls basketball team hasn’t won a playoff game since its last extended playoff run to the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals when it took down Pine-Richland and Norwin.
That was seven years ago.
Now, after winning seven of their past eight games heading into a Section 2-5A matchup with Indiana on Feb. 18, the Foxes are looking to deliver their first postseason victory in quite some time.
“We feel pretty good, but we’re still hungry and striving for more,” Fox Chapel coach Marty Matvey said. “Obviously, the one setback in the past games was against Armstrong, and we feel that we still aren’t playing to our potential. So, we look forward to these next couple games and the end of the year here.”

Sewickley Academy senior Max Belt plays defense on Alex Matlak during a practice on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020.
For the past four years, Sewickley Academy senior Max Belt has been a mainstay in the boys basketball playing rotation and always has provided coach Win Palmer with a steady perimeter-shooting presence. This season, the three-year starter has taken his game to a new level.
Through their first seven games of the season, the Panthers are 4-3 overall, and Belt has played a huge part. He is scoring 19 points per game, is the team’s leading rebounder and also has taken on more of a ball-handling role.

Quaker Valley’s Patrick Cutchember wrestles Ellwood City’s Austin Walley in the 182-pound weight class at the 2020 WPIAL Class AA wrestling championships.
Quaker Valley wrestlers wanted to come into this season and test themselves against the best teams around. So far, the Quakers have done just that.
On Jan. 16, WPIAL Class AA No. 5 Quaker Valley traveled to the Seneca Valley Duals and came away with a record of 3-2 in five matches, losing to WPIAL Class AAA No. 2 Seneca Valley (52-9) and No. 5 Franklin Regional (36-31).
As the only Class AA team at the duals, the Quakers came away with wins over Mt. Lebanon (36-33), Plum (43-25) and Hampton (42-27). Quaker Valley assistant coach Austin Heinl was happy with how his team performed over the course of the day.
