Following intensive fundraising efforts during Greek Week 2021 and a month of additional activities to support their various philanthropies and causes, University of Miami fraternities and sororities are celebrating their successes, even though pandemic restrictions forced them to find creative ways to come together to raise money.
From beach cleanups to a recorded anatomy fashion show fundraiser on Lakeside Patio, Greek members shifted to give-back mode at a time when charities and nonprofit groups most need help during the pandemic.
Sigma Delta Tau raised $27,000 toward preventing child abuse in America; Sigma Phi Epsilon raised more than $5,000 for Best Buddies Miami, which helps children with disabilities; and Sigma Chi raised more than $60,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
Brittany Zazueta was only a year older than Collin Wiant when the Ohio University pledge died after inhaling a whippet inside his fraternity s off-campus annex house in 2018. But Zazueta didn t remember hearing much about Wiant s death from the leaders of her sorority at Wright State University. It was something we were aware of and something that people were talking about, but any introspection didn t last long, said Zazueta, now a 21-year-old senior studying marketing and entrepreneurship.
But when news about the death of Bowling Green State University sophomore Stone Foltz spread across Ohio s college campuses in early March, the discussion changed.
UT’s Greek Week Raises $62,000 in Seven Days
In seven days, UT’s Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) community raised almost $62,000 to help several philanthropies that are important to all 20 active UT chapters.
“It’s phenomenal,” said Ryne Burds, assistant director of FSL. “It’s a record for us.”

Greek Week, held this year from Feb. 28 to March 6, is a week-long fundraising event that promotes unity and emphasizes FSL’s mission of service and wellness to the 1,400 students involved. Through competitions and educational events, each chapter raises money toward supporting community nonprofits.
AUSTINTOWN H. Douglas Wilcox, 70, peacefully passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Doug was born Sept. 6, 1950, the only son of Harrison Burky and Helen McClure Wilcox.
He was a lifetime resident of Austintown and a member of Austintown Community Church. While growing up in the church, an important part of his life was scouting. He worked hard to receive his God and Country award and subsequently his Eagle Scout award.
He enjoyed reading, outdoor activities, being with friends and crafts. Several of his creations received blue-ribbon awards at the Canfield Fair. He was a member of the World War II Heritage Society, Mahoning County Retired Teachers, Ohio Education Association, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, M Club of Mount Union, 33rd Degree Club of the Valley of Youngstown and the Austintown Friends of the Public Library. Doug served as vice president and program chairman for the Friends for 11 years.
