Greece Athena graduate receives Helfer Youth Scholarship

The 2021 Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Scholarship is going to Greece Athena High School graduate Halie Cardon, who was recognized during a Town Board meeting with a proclamation and $2,000 check.
The scholarship annually recognizes a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills. It was established by the town to highlight Helfer’s character, virtue and love of learning and public service. Helfer served on the Greece Youth Board, as a town councilman for 10 years and as deputy supervisor until his passing in 2014.

A “Look Back” – Brian King
The majority of my youth was spent running around a football field, or a parking lot playing my snare drum. I was not a football player, rather I was in The Empire Statesmen Drum Corps here in Rochester. As a drummer, yeah I was in jazz band in middle school, but I was really exposed to big band music in The Statesmen. The founder Vince Bruni wanted to entertain the crowd, so instead of playing music that people may not know, he picked tunes that people would enjoy like Sing Sing Sing, Moonlight Serenade, Take the A Train and just about any other popular big band tune you can name! We put a unique spin on these tunes, but my big band vocabulary began to grow and we added more tunes to the growing list we performed. Plus having thousands of people cheering for you didn’t hurt!

Gonzaga got out to a 23-2 lead to start the game and never looked back as the Bulldogs collected their 10th double-digit win of the season. Of Gonzaga’s 11 wins, four have come against top 20 teams.
Corey Kispert and Drew Timme led the initial surge, with Kispert scoring seven and Timme eight in the run. The Bulldogs held BYU to 1-for-10 to start the contest with six turnovers.
Kispert finished the game with 23 points on nine of 16 shooting. Timme had 12 points on five made twos and two free throws. Jalen Suggs and Andrew Nembhard also scored in double figures with 16 and 12, respectively.
