The first of April 2021 marked a key milestone in the history of Greater Jonglei, and in particular the counties of Pibor and Uror –Pieri, in South Sudan. It was the month when an agreement was finally brokered between these counties to facilitate the return of 58 abducted children and women to their families.
For many years, the different communities in Jonglei State had been involved in inter communal violence related to cattle wrestling and revenge killings and attacks. Last year more than 1000 people were wounded or killed[1] from the different communities as a result. Communities of Jonglei State and their neighbours in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) are peacefully co-existing following a peace conference held in Juba early this year, an official said.
On 27 January, a three-day peace conference by communities of Greater Jonglei Dinka, Nuer, Murle, and Anyuak concluded in Juba, with the communities agreeing to bury their differences and peacefully coexist.
The initiative is part of government efforts to restore peace to Jonglei following last year’s months-long deadly clashes involving youth from Dinka, Nuer, and Murle.
Among the key resolutions were the recovery of abducted children from all sides, return of raided cattle, creation of joint police, a buffer zone, a common market, local courts, and punishment of the deal violators.
Over 250 head of cattle were stolen during a raid by a group of armed bandits in Pieri Payam, Uror County of Jonglei State over the weekend, local authorities said.

This is my final press conference as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan.
I wanted to take this opportunity to speak directly to you – the people of South Sudan – to thank you for your support and to wish you well as I prepare to depart the country tomorrow after more than four years of service here.
