COVID testing labs feel more normal prompting concern from officials

Daily coronavirus cases in Michigan have shot up over the last few weeks, but the number of diagnostic tests run for the virus has risen much more slowly.
The average number of new daily cases of the virus has more than doubled since Feb. 18, but testing has only increased about 10%.
Jacqueline Peacock is the director of laboratory operations at NxGen MDx, a diagnostic lab in Grand Rapids that processes samples from across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. She used to work until 2 a.m. and barely had time to eat most days during the peak of local outbreaks this winter, she said.

Starting next week, the Saginaw County Health Department will be vaccinating four categories in parallel: remaining adults 65+, adults 50+ with underlying health conditions, caregivers/guardians of special needs children, and additional critical infrastructure workers. SAGINAW, MI The Saginaw County Health Department has had a busy week, with the recent expansion of COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to adults age 50 and older.
The vaccination of adults age 65 and older is progressing rapidly and winding down, according to health department officials, with last-call communications going out instructing those not already scheduled or vaccinated to call 989-771-1010 to make an appointment this week.

The Evangel Life Assembly of God church has been hosting COVID-19 vaccination clinics over the past few weeks, but that will not be for much longer.
Apart from the county’s first clinic held at Bad Axe High School, all of the county’s subsequent clinics have taken place at that church. These clinics will soon move to a more permanent location at the Huron Crest Plaza between the Great Lakes Bay Health location and Dunham Sports later in March.

UPPER THUMB - According to the state s report on Saturday December 12, the Upper Thumb saw an increase of 13 confirmed coronavirus related deaths, the highest number of deaths seen for the area.
Huron County saw an increase of 39 confirmed coronavirus cases and 3 deaths, bringing their total to 1,082 positive cases and 26 dead.
According to state testing data, Huron County saw a positivity rate of 21%, with 60 positive cases out of 284 tests processed Dec. 11. This is up from 4% from the day prior.
