i m laura coates and this is cnn tonight. a short time ago we heard from an emotional and increasingly frustrated president biden. after all it was vice president biden nearly a decade ago who had the distinct responsibility to formulating the government s response to the tragedy at sandy hook. tonight he delivered his first prime time address to the nation on gun violence and the epidemic that has become in america. you may have noticed the 56 candles burning behind him. they re meant to represent shooting victims from all u.s. states and territories. and it came amid cries of enough. after columbine, after sandy hook, after charleston, after orlando, after las vegas, after parkland, nothing has been done. this time, that can t be true. this time, we must actually do something. this isn t about taking away anyone s rights. it s about protecting children. it s about protecting families. for god sake, how much more carnage are we willing to accept? how many more innoce
i cannot allow myself to be pessi pessimistic. this is way it s always going to be. you know the power and a place like washington, d.c., that s how it will keep going. if you say there s a pleating happening behind closed doors and everything will change, i d like specificity. i would like safety as well. i think the mid terms will be huge. i think people will be voting on this issue in the mid terms. i ve bp watching, i like to stay away from social media as much as i can but i ve been looking at socme of the things from con sef conservative members of congress and their constituents are saying we have to do something. that s why i m hopeful about it. if they re jobs are on the line come november, i think that will put some pressure on them. i hope so. i hope this time is different because i don t know how much more i can take or the nation s heart can take watching another closed casket of a shichild. i agree. see you tomorrow. joe biden said it. to be honest about
president s direct involvement? i would love the president s direct involvement and he has been directly involved. he s passed executive orders. the president is not a king. the president cannot just by fiat claim something to be the case. the system starts with congress to pass laws. the house of representatives has passed, in my time in congress, we have passed most of this major legislation. it goes to the senate to die like most things do but we re going to do it again. we re going to go and go back next week and we re going to pass it again because that s what the american people deserve and we re going to send it back over to the senate and people should vote and go back to their constituents and have to justify their vote and stand by their vote. we re going to make them vote. that s their job. we need to continue to push hard and have the american people m push with us to put pressure on those who are not willing to come to the table. do you think americans should
