Miss Vest and Mr. Quest (Roanoke City Public Schools)
ROANOKE, Va. – Everyone loves a good love story, and Roanoke City Public Schools has one that’ll put a smile on your face.
RCPS brought to Facebook to announce that Megan Vest, a teacher a Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and Zachary Quest, a teacher at William Fleming High School are getting married.
The two love birds met while teaching and believe that it was meant to be.
“If it weren’t for RCPS, we wouldn’t have even met. And now we love both getting to serve our community. Our hearts are here!” said Vest.

Letâs kick off this week with something a little different. Itâs springtime for COVID, yâall!
As I write this from my remote work location at home, I spy a nice day out my window, and thatâs the trend. Winter is pretty much over. Daylight Savings Time starts Sunday. The governor has lifted the restrictions that hampered a lot of indoor dining and live music. People are posting selfies with their vaccination stickers.
But the damnable C-bug is not gone yet. And variants are wilding out, too.

The last time I wrote about Saint Francis Service Dogs, the local nonprofit was seeking volunteers. In September 2019 at the Grandin Theatre, it staged a free showing of âPick of the Litter,â a heralded documentary that follows training for five seeing-eye service dogs.
As a result, âwe had more than 30 people fill in our volunteer forms,â Youell told me Tuesday. That âwas hugeâ and far beyond the groupâs expectations.
Nine stepped forward as future âpuppy raisers,â the most time-consuming kind of volunteering one can perform for Saint Francis. Another 19 signed up to be âpuppy sitters,â folks who agree to give âpuppy raisersâ a break for vacations or trips out of town.

ROANOKE, Va. – The Star City isn’t necessarily known for movie stars, but an aspiring filmmaker from Roanoke decided to capture his hometown on camera.
Michael Fleming directed the short thriller film “Parallax,” which premiered at the Grandin Theatre earlier this month. Fleming shot the nine-minute film on a $300 budget in the Roanoke area, mostly at the Shell gas station on Electric Road near Tanglewood Mall.
This was Fleming’s first film, and he is now submitting his movie to several film festivals. He hopes it helps people realize Roanoke has an under-the-radar creative community.
