Whereas both the national and provincial pass rates declined significantly, the city bucked this trend to post an improvement of just over 4 percentage points. To be specific, the national pass rate declined from 81% in 2019 to 76% in 2020 (5 percentage points) and the Eastern Cape from 77% to 68% (9 percentage points), but Makhanda improved from 76% to 80%. This is a remarkable achievement in many respects. For example:

Amid the doom, gloom and school closures of last year, most amazingly and surprisingly, they produced the best-ever city pass rate of 80%. This places the city twelve percentages points higher than the provincial average and re-establishes it as the leading education hub in the Eastern Cape. As far as individual school performance is concerned, Victoria Girls’ High School led the way with a perfect 100% pass rate, closely followed by Graeme College, PJ Olivier and Ntsika.

Supplied Somana s grandfather died the same year - but the pupil managed to achieve four distinctions. The King William s Town boarding school, famous for producing rugby players, attained a 95.6% pass rate. Despite losing a grandfather and being Dale College s first pupil to test positive for Covid-19, Luhle-uthando Somana, 18, came out as the school s third top performer after garnering four distinctions. Somana is one of a handful of pupils from the King William s Town school, who passed despite challenges presented by Covid-19. Another pupil, Mihle Kunene, managed to attain a satisfactory set of results, with four Cs, despite losing his father to Covid-19.

Hope and planning in uncertain times

Hope and planning in uncertain times Makhanda high schools had their own challenges at the start of the new school year. Emotional wellbeing as the effects of Covid-19 and the lockdown sweep through communities and a return to some kind of structure and routine are high on the lists of principals’ priorities.  Khutliso Daniels Principal Radio Mcuba on the first day of school 15 February 2021.
