DAR honors four high school seniors
The Joseph McDowell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recognized four high school seniors for their citizenship at a virtual chapter meeting on Feb. 12. Awards went to Guadalupe Aguilar-Gaona of Henderson County Early College, Gracie Milner of Hendersonville High School, Sarah Monoson of West Henderson High School and Jordan Reaves of North Henderson High School. The topic for this year’s essay was: How do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?
The winners also participated in extracurricular activities, contributed to the community, demonstrated preparation for college and exemplified the qualities that make a good citizen: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Craven was re-elected to a second term on the board on Nov. 3 when voters also put Kathy Revis, Robert Bridges and Stacey Caskey on the board. The board voted unamimously for Craven as chair. After Jay Egolf nominated Holt as vice chair, Caskey nominated Revis, who declined. The board then elected Holt as chair.
Board members thanked the school community for its support after a 13-year-old boy shot a 12-year-old classmate in the leg in the gym where students gather before homeroom. The girl recovered and is back in school now.
“Everybody came together and nobody felt unsafe, that I’ve heard from, about the particular incident, Craven said. We will be looking further into what we can do as a board to make our students and families feel even safer.”
“We could not safely instruct, supervise and operate a school without necessary staffing, Superintendent John Bryant. As a board, we talked about this situation being on the horizon. We have to be prepared to close and choose to do so when necessary.”
When only one bus driver was available at one Henderson County school, the school pulled teachers and other staff members with a bus driver license to take the wheel for the day. Each individual school is adjusting accordingly as needs arise, Bryant said.
