A victim of a demolition exercise carried out by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government in a Lagos community, Oworonshoki on Wednesday gave birth in a canoe due to lack of health facilities in the area. SaharaReporters gathered that the woman was on her way to a hospital in a nearby community for quick medical assistance when she had the baby. “A demolition victim gave birth to her child inside the canoe due to lack of healthcare facilities around Oworonshoki community,” a source from the community told SaharaReporters.
Some concerned residents of Lagos State on Tuesday mourned the death of Mrs Ladi Joshua James, a 33-year-old pregnant woman believed by her family to have died because of the demolition exercise carried out by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government in Oworonshoki and Idi Araba communities in the Kosofe and Mushin local government areas of the state. According to her family, Mrs James died due to psychological and emotional stress she underwent after the state government demolished their house.
The traditional ruler of Oworonshoki Community in the Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State, Oba Babatunde Saliu, has denied the allegation that he abducted one Mrs Ajanlekoko and some other victims of the recent demolition exercise in the community. The alleged victims are prominent protesters against the demolition carried out by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led state government in Oworonshoki. SaharaReporters had reported that Saliu was accused of abducting one Mrs Ajanlekoko, a victim of Oworonshoki demolition and a prominent protester against the demolition.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has again invited the residents of Oworonshoki in the Kosofe local government area of the state over the continued demolition of their houses, without providing them with alternative shelters. This was made known by a human rights and pro-democracy group, Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) in a post on X, formerly Twitter on Sunday while sharing a copy of the invitation letter. According to the group, the new meeting between the lawmakers and the residents is slated for Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
