Im dana bash live in the nations capital. Heres the headline the United States government will not shut down, at least not for another 45 days. Right now, as you see on your screen, that is the United States senate. It is voting as we speak to keep the government open. This is happening just hours before the deadline. Senators are voting on a bill that passed the house earlier today. That bill not only continues the Government Spending levels, it includes disaster relief, but no money for ukraine, no additional money for ukraine, or Border Security. On the senate side, which is where we are right now, there was some lastminute drama. One senator held up a vote over concerns about the lack of Ukraine Funding in this bill, but Leaders Schumer and mcconnell struck a deal. They vowed not to give up on support for ukrainians in the war against russia. But theres also more drama. The fate of House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy is uncertain at this time as hardliners in his party are pushing for his
out within hours again. but it is possible this time that the drama could end with a shutdown averted. there is a big new budget bill making its wau its way through congress with something for both sides. and there is. over the next two years it would add $131 billion in domestic spending and $165 billion in military spending and $90 million in disaster spending. it could pass the senate but face a tougher road in the house but if it makes it through, it is exposing serious divisions in both parties. republicans who have long claimed to be the party concerned about debt and deficit face a vote to raise government spending levels. conservatives sh the ones that do still care about the deficit, are up in arms about that. democrats are divided too. for different reasons. chuck schumer cheered the bill but nancy pelosi plans to vote against it and saying she can t support a funding bill without a vote on a daca solution. let me bring in our capitol hill correspondent cait case kasie
including government spending levels, daca, border security, children s health care, the c.h.i.p. program, disaster aid, the list goes on and on. but with regard to daca, which seems to be the issue that is the focal point of much of this, could democrats have gone a different route to getting daca resolved? you know, it s really hard to see how we could go a different route, because the president created an artificial crisis by rescinding daca and basically saying in march, you know, all of these 800,000 young people, their lives are going to be completely uprooted, and then letting that clock tick and tick and tick until we are where we are today. the reality is there is bipartisan support for a dream act to fix this problem. there s bipartisan support for children s health care. but the white house and the gop leadership in congress won t allow that to be part of the package unless they can use it as leverage to get something else, to build a wall or whatever their priority is.
revelation you didn t expect to come out. the calendar doesn t change nor does the to-do list. they get back from thanksgiving break, go back to washington next week, clock starts. where does it go from there? before anything else, congress has to pass a short-term spending bills. it expires exactly two weeks from today. so on tuesday, president trump is going to be meeting with congressional leaders to figure out how to avoid a government shutdown. first, they have to agree on total government spending levels. that hasn t even happened yet. and then they have to write the funding bill for the rest of the fiscal year. and don t forget daca, democrats may try to use that for leverage. and then president trump s top priority, tax reform, promising massive tax cuts by christmas. so a lot to do and not a lot of time. thanks so much for covering it all for us. more on this, we ll bring in kelly jane torrance. thanks for coming in.
the far right who elected eric cantor wanted was forking this election to happen in this way. i wonder what we ll hear from them. how exactly these folks are going to govern for the rest of the year. that s why i would say perhaps we might want to look at the next government spending fight. we have government spending levels set but it is required for the u.s. congress to pass those funding levels. so perhaps if the conservatives feel they haven t gotten enough out of the leadership elections there could be in the fall not saying it s going to happen but the only real major piece of legislation that has to go through the congress and the house is what funds the federal government when the fiscal year expires in the fall. so, that s something to look out for because they re going to want something they see this as conservative angst, the reason the majority leader cantor lost and they want some indication they re moving more right.
