Confronting rising popular anger, President Gotabhaya Rajapakse called an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the country’s worsening debt crisis.
A district court in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo ordered the government nurses union to suspend strike action on February 9, reports Chris Slee. This followed more than three months of strikes and protests by health workers.
Health Minister Rambukwella told the media that the government “strategically used the law courts” and convinced union leaders to stop the strike, without him agreeing to any major demand.
While the nurses and other health workers have demonstrated their determination to fight, the GNOA leadership responded to Rajapakse’s dictates by announcing that the union was immediately withdrawing from the strike.
