week. how in the world does somebody like barbara comstock survive the events? how in the world do people in districts where hillary won, republicans survive the president s reaction to the bombs? they are politically cornered. even if they don t like president trump they are aligned with house speaker paul ryan and other republican leaders who are aligned with president trump. what they are banking on when you talk to them is that the economy will help them survive. that people will look past the tweets, look past the the racially charged language, look past the scandals and say well the economy is solid and we got a supreme court justice. we actually got two. that could be enough. that s more of a gut feeling from vulnerable republicans than any dined of data-driven facts. these declarations from the president, 5200 troops to the border, news from axios he s carcinogenic of getting rid of birth right citizenship.
supreme court justices. that has been the standard line from presidential candidates so that when they ve got a supreme court justice, a nominee appearing in front of the judiciary committee, we won t be able to run video of them saying exactly what they want their supreme court justice to do. which, of course, we are able to do with donald trump. donald trump in so many ways just shows a total failure to understand the importance of independence among the institutions that support the criminal justice system and the courts. it s a failure here with the integrity and the importance of that integrity for the supreme court. so it does cause judge kavanaugh to come under this heightened level of scrutiny, and as neera points out, it s a difficult inquiry here, because he says one thing in public but he said something else in internal deliberations in the white house in a more private setting, and common sense tells you it s
precedent of roe is really that, kabuki theatre, and the truth is that this is the one area where donald trump has been telling the truth for years, and that is that it is his intent to move the supreme court to overturn roe. we are just we just we are just in a political situation where republicans don t want to admit that ahead of the midterm elections, to ensure that democrats become engaged in this, but now we have kavanaugh s own words. his words are that he considers roe something that can be overturned by a future court, one that he would sit on. and joyce vance, this is something that presidents when they re campaigning have been very careful to try to protect their supreme court nominees from. they have always tended to say i won t have any litmus test for supreme court justices. that has been the standard line from presidential candidates so that when they ve got a supreme court justice, a nominee
there. let s just be honest, this is president who can t get out of his own way, right? he says he accepts the conclusion of his own intelligence community that russia meddled in the 2016 election, but he can t mean that and then immediately say it could have been someone else, too. and then there s this president trump adding his own hand written note to the script reading there was no collusion, by the way misspelling the word. just in case there was any chance he would forget to tell us that. one official telling cnn, quote, he is consumed with talk of no collusion and adding he thinks it s the answer to everything. but there s more. the president shockingly enough crossing out a line that read anyone involved in that meddling to justice. honestly that happened. he crossed out the part, bringing anyone involved to justice. didn t want to say that part.
is big deal. i think we just have to be patient and find out. let s hope our president isn t and hasn t done treason. but this is all about the mid-term elections right now. the republican are afraid of beating up on trump because he s the leader of the party. they ve got a supreme court justice to get through in their minds in the fall. so they d like to kind of punt trump criticism down further to get beyond this mid-term. what s going to be interesting, don, is when does the mueller investigation become public? will it be september before the election or after the election? that s a big deal. and i think it s inflamed democrats and anti-trump forces. right now helsinki, it s like a battle cry. remember helsinki may help democrats have something of a blue wave in november. that has to be the last word. thank you, james, thank you, doug, i appreciate it. when we come back a grand
