communities. i.c.e. officers work in dangerous conditions to protect our communities. and more than a third of i.c.e. officers happen to be veterans themselves. about a third. [applause] but democratic politicians want to abolish i.c.e. they want to see open borders. can you imagine? every once in a while you will hear something, and you have to understand the other side. when you hear, open borders, for you here, get rid of i.c.e., you hear some of the things they are proposing, it s like, you can t even understand it. do you understand that the open borders, we would have millions of people pouring into our country. millions of people you don t want in our country but you would have millions of people pouring into our country and the crime would be unbelievable.
never give up, and we will never stop fighting for our country, our flag and our freedom. [cheers and applause] that was president trump wrapping up his remarks at the vfw national convention. they were touching on a lot of topics. health care for veterans, the va of course, talking about getting remains returned from north korea and the progress there, he had everything. tariffs, he did a few jokes about the media of course and that got applause.
and from a military standpoint space is becoming more and more important. also we have secured for military service members and their families, the largest you don t really want it, you are too patriotic for this. but the largest pay raise in almost a decade. [cheers and applause] you don t want it. [laughs] anybody willing to give it up for the sake of your country? okay. keep it. you deserve it, you really do. it s been a long time since you have gotten a raise, you deserve it. my administration is committed to ensuring that our war fighters have the tools, the resources, the firepower that they needed to defeat our enemies with overwhelming force.
[cheers and applause] since taking office and working alongside of the vfw, and they have done an incredible job helping us with the va. comp located subject, they help us in different ways so much for putting in legislation, but i say let s make sure it s legislation that is good and works, not that is obsolete before we get it. we will fight to get everyone to approve it, let s get approved what s good. and we have enacted some of the largest va reforms in the history of the va. probably the largest. last year i signed into law the landmark ca accountability owin,
$817 billion. we rebuilt china. what the european union is doing to us is incredible. they made $151 billion. they sound nice, but they are rough. they are all coming in to see me tomorrow. they are all coming to the white house. they said, they have to change. they didn t want to change. they said okay we will tariff your cars. mercedes, bmw, so many cars. i said we will have to tariff your cars. and they said to come up when can we be there. would tomorrow be okay? well, folks, stick with us.
