Clair Marvin Butch Shaffer | Obituaries

Surrounded by his family, Clair Marvin “Butch” Shaffer, passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow on March 2, 2021. Butch was born March 13, 1935, in Sandpoint to Jesse and Catherine Shaffer. The youngest of 12 children, he was given the nickname Butch as a young boy by his older siblings. The nickname suited him and stayed with him the remainder of his life. He attended Sandpoint public schools and graduated from high school in 1953. He was Student Body President his senior year of high school. He played football for the Sandpoint Bulldogs and attended the University of Idaho on a football scholarship. He had the distinct honor of playing football with future Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer.

Ward Whitwam, designer of iconic South Dakota rest area tipis, dies at age 97 Dan Crisler, Watertown Public Opinion © Jay Pickthorn / Argus Leader Ward Whitwam, an architect, designed the tipi sculptures located at rest stops throughout South Dakota. The concrete tipis now on are the National Register of Historic Places, nominated by the South Dakota State Historical Society. Ward Whitwam, a Watertown native who designed some of South Dakota’s most iconic structures, died Monday. He was 97.  Born on Dec. 12, 1923, the 1941 Watertown High School graduate achieved fame in the state’s architecture circles beginning in the 1950s. Having operated his own firm out of Sioux Falls, Whitwam was the brains behind recognizable structures in the state’s largest city, including Good Samaritan Village along North Minnesota Avenue, the chapel at Augustana University and Hope Lutheran Church.
