Stuart Russell
Stuart Russell teaches computer science and engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Speaking to Srijana Mitra Das at Times Evoke, he discusses how artificial intelligence machines could revolutionise human life and his growing concerns about these powerful entities:
What is the core of your work on AI?
For most of my career, I’ve worked on how to get machines to be more intelligent. My work has covered almost every area of AI learning, reasoning, planning, vision, speech, language, etc. Some overarching themes have included methods for making good decisions with limited computational resources, algorithms capable of making plans over very long timescales and algorithms for reasoning under uncertainty on very complex problems an example is the new global seismic monitoring system for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
