The threat of new volcanic eruptions from Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have triggered thousands of residents to flee from the eastern city of Goma, the UN humanitarian office said on Friday.
Speaking at a UN news briefing in Geneva, Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that “thousands of residents from Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are displaced and on the move after an order from the authorities to evacuate areas that are at risk by further volcanic eruptions of Mount Nyiragongo”.

Electricity has been cut off in the city of Goma as some residents leave their homes and head for the border around Rwanda.
Mount Nyiragon in eastern eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, has erupted, sending terror terrorists from the nearby city of Goma, even though a volcanologist seems to be in no danger to the city.
The city cut off electricity and some residents began to leave their homes on Saturday on the border around Rwanda.
The military governor of North Kivu province, the capital of Goma, “confirmed the eruption of the Nyiragon volcano … around 19:00 [17:00 GMT]”.
