Children celebrate their First Communion at Somerset s St. John of God The Herald News SOMERSET For generations, May has been a time for First Communions, devotions to Mary and other traditions in the Catholic church. As the area emerges from the pandemic, COVID has changed but not eliminated these and other festivities. At St. John of God Church in Somerset, 28 children received the Eucharist for the first time on May 2. In order to accommodate families while ensure social distancing, two Masses were held, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. “This is another joyous occasion of celebration for the parish of St. John of God continuing to live parish life as normal as possible following safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID,” said the Rev. Jason Brilhante, parish administrator.

Rachel Ochoa receives St Pius X Youth Award from Fall River Diocese

The Herald News SOMERSET Rachel B. Ochoa was one of 47 young persons recognized by the Fall River Diocese for service to their parishes in a virtual ceremony in December. Ochoa was nominated by Father Jason Brilhante, parochial administrator at St. John of God Church in Somerset. She received the award from him after the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, Dec. 20. For several years, Ochoa has shared her singing talent by practicing with the First Holy Communion class in preparation for their first time to receive the Eucharist. In addition, she participates in the Peer Ministry and has helped with Faith Formation instruction on Sunday mornings.

Susan leads local walks for charity

A KEEN walker and trained mountain leader is planning a series of winter walks in aid of a local charity. Susan Uttley is inviting anyone who would like to join a small group of people on a socially-distanced, six-mile circular walk around Oxenhope and Haworth. She is also happy to lead a group of friends or a family on the walk, which will take in the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and scenery made famous in the film The Railway Children. Susan, who lives in Clayton, is hosting the walk on six dates over the Christmas and New Year period, in aid of Down Syndrome Bradford, a charity close to her heart.
