SOMERSET For generations, May has been a time for First Communions, devotions to Mary and other traditions in the Catholic church. As the area emerges from the pandemic, COVID has changed but not eliminated these and other festivities.
At St. John of God Church in Somerset, 28 children received the Eucharist for the first time on May 2. In order to accommodate families while ensure social distancing, two Masses were held, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
“This is another joyous occasion of celebration for the parish of St. John of God continuing to live parish life as normal as possible following safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID,” said the Rev. Jason Brilhante, parish administrator.

SOMERSET Although many people have taken down their Easter decorations, in the Christian church, the season lasts 50 days and ends on Pentecost, the feast celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ disciples.
During these seven weeks, Somerset s St. John of God parish will continue the tradition established by Queen Isabel of Aragon, better known as St. Elizabeth of Portugal, which honors the Holy Spirit.
On the following seven Sundays, or “Domingas” in Portuguese, the families select individuals to receive special blessings and be “crowned.” Traditionally, individual families invite people into their homes, display a silver crown topped with a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, and pray a rosary each night. This year, to ensure social distancing, the prayers will be in the church hall.
