Baldock Rotary Club has been out planting trees for a new woodland in the town - with the help of North East Herts MP Sir Oliver Heald.
After giving a talk to the club at a recent Zoom meeting, the MP was invited to plant a tree in the new Rotary wood close to Ivel Springs, organised by members Rob Hemmings and North Herts District Councillor Michael Muir.
Sir Oliver planted two Alder (Alnus glutinosa) trees which are native to Britain and are also found throughout Europe and as far afield as Siberia.
THERE are plans to create 11 hectares of woodland at an historic National Trust property. A planning application to create the woodland at Wallington Hall has been submitted for Northumberland County Council for consideration. The Wallington Estate Woodland Creation is part of a bigger Defra and National Lottery Heritage Funded project awarded to the National Trust after a successful application to the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, entitled “Delivering nature-rich historic landscapes, resilient to climate change . The project will see the creation of 11 hectares of new broadleaved woodland within the riparian corridor of the Hart Burn, a sub-catchment of the River Wansbeck.
Trees have been planted in Bridport - at a rate of one a minute – in an amazing community effort. Bridport Tree Planting volunteers planted 75 saplings in 75 minutes at Dibdin View - a piece of land in the Flaxhayes area which is owned by Magna Housing Association. Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Downy Birch, Crab-Apple, Goat Willow, Beech and Alder were planted by the seven socially-distanced enthusiasts. They were given support by dog walkers and other passes by - with the group saying many commented on how encouraging it was to see new trees in an area where other trees had previously been vandalised. The saplings will be soon followed by some larger trees, Oaks and Hornbeam.
