Guwahati, Apr 6 (IANS): Tuesday s third and final phase of polling in 40 of the 126-member Assam Assembly is a litmus test for both the ruling BJP-led alliance and the opposition Congress-led Mahajot (grand alliance).
Of the 40 Assembly segments, bordering Bhutan, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh, at least 13 seats are Muslim majority, six reserved for the tribals and two reserved for the people belonging to the scheduled caste.
Tuesday s electoral battle in 12 districts, according to the political experts, would be decisive for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Congress as both the parties had won 11 seats each in the 2016 Assembly polls.

The AGP, an alliance partner of the ruling BJP-led combine in Assam, on Sunday released its third list of candidates containing 13 names, including minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury and Bhojpuri singer Kalpana Patowary, for the assembly polls in the state. Names of three sitting MLAs also feature in the list declared by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita for the third and last phase of polling on April 6. Apart from Phani Bhushan Choudhury who will contest from Bongaigaon, the other sitting MLAs are Kalita himself who will be in the fray from Guwahati West and Gunindra Nath Das from Barpeta constituency.

The way to a prospective voter’s head is through the hair, the authorities in a western Assam district have found out.
The Goalpara district administration has been distributing combs and other utilitarian items of daily use, such as sanitary pads, with SVEEP messages printed on them. SVEEP expands to Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation, the flagship programme of the Election Commission of India for promoting voter literacy in the country.
“We chose simple essentials like the comb so that people are reminded of their civic responsibility on a daily basis,” Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka told
