New mapping has painted thousands more Northland properties at risk of future flooding and erosion, raising alarm in communities such as Mangawhai. The Northland Regional Council has updated its coastal hazard maps, showing sites at risk of flooding and erosion in 50 to 100 years’ time, especially if sea levels rapidly rise. Since 2017 when the maps were last drawn, 7500 properties have been added to the coastal flood zone, bring the total number to about 20,000.

(File photo) Dargaville police are appealing for witnesses to an aggravated robbery in Northland last September, after their own enquiries were unsuccessful. The incident occurred on Friday, September 25, between 6pm and 10pm, at Glinks Gully, an isolated west coast beach south of Dargaville. The victim was parked at Glinks Gully having a snack when he was approached by two men in a four-wheel-drive and assaulted, police said. The man’s grey Toyota Prado and other items were taken from him.
