One hundred years after that 1908 article was published, Calgary was coming off an “explosive population boom,” according to experts quoted in this July 22, 2008 article. However, from April 2007 to April 2008, the city still grew by 22,950 people 12,441 more people moved to Calgary than left it. This was the equivalent of 34 people a day arriving to live in the city. Meanwhile, there were 9,696 more births than deaths in Calgary during the same 12 month period.

The Grey Nuns Community Hospital was facing a deadly COVID-19 outbreak when registered nurse Nick Beil turned to his colleagues from a century ago for advice on how to persevere through a catastrophic pandemic.
Nothing in his two decades as a nurse compares to what the emergency department has come up against during the pandemic. The south Edmonton hospital has been contending with outbreaks on three units since late October.
