It has been almost a year since the first pandemic death was recorded in eastern Ontario on May 4, marking the beginning of a somber and unprecedented time.
The death, at the Pinecrest long-term care home in Plantagenet, was reported on May 4 by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, and was the first of 11 to be reported at the home. Those 11 deaths remained constant throughout the summer and early fall, at a time when new cases averaged 20 per month. It seemed the spread was under control, and the EOHU declared no active cases in Cornwall in August.
