Cellist Zlatomir Fung of Westboro performs recital from BrickBox Theater for Music Worcester

At the 2011 Young Artist Competition put on by Music Worcester in Alden Hall at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the Music Guild Prize was won by 12-year-old cellist Zlatomir Fung of Westboro. The competition was for musicians ages 12-18 in Worcester County. Fung received a $1,100 scholarship and an invitation to perform at the Music Guild s Luncheon and Musicale.   Ten months later in 2012, Fung was performing as a cello soloist at Symphony Pro Music concerts in Westboro and Hudson. I remember the room in which the composition happened, Fung, now 21, said. A lot of these competitions I did, I remember quite vividly because I was building it up in my mind as the biggest thing I ve ever done. And it was true. At the time, it was the biggest thing I ve ever done.

McCourry and Kabodian’s per­for­mance pre­sented a unique mixture of organ and trumpet with a program fea­turing mostly baroque music from com­posers such as Bach and Telemann. They con­cluded their concert with a 20th century piece which included a chorus com­posed of trumpets played by stu­dents Ethan Buehrer and James Wasylyshyn, and trom­bones played by Gregory Clement and Avery Miller.

German soprano Edita Gruberova is honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado is Artist of the Year, Turkish pianist Can Cakmur is Young Artist of the Year. The Discovery Award is awarded to 14-year-old German violinist Maya Wichert. Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings is the Label of the Year. A Special Award is conferred to Drazen Domjanic, General Manager of the Sinfonieorchester Liechtenstein as well as founder and Manager of the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein and to violinist Ingolf Turban.
