Brockton Boys & Girls Club expansion: clubhouse would serve pre-teens

BROCKTON Positioned firmly in downtown Brockton, the Boys & Girls Club of Metro South had been the afterschool go to spot for nearly 500 youth before the pandemic. Eyeing a post-pandemic future, the Boys and Girls Club is seeking to expand in order to accommodate even more youth. “The growth our Brockton Clubhouse has experienced in the past five years is remarkable,” said Peter Vlaco, a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro South s board of directors, in a press release on April 6. During the pandemic, the Boys & Girls Club, 233 Warren Ave., has only been able to serve a fraction of the normal number of youth they normally would due to social distancing requirements.

Brockton orgs get $410,000 grant to address food insecurity, housing

BROCKTON  A project to convert motel rooms into permanent housing. A freight container remade into a self-contained farm. A system for area food pantries to better serve the community. These are the projects three Brockton organizations will bring to life with the help of a $410,000 grant from Beth Israel Lahey Health to address food insecurity and housing stability. The recipients are Father Bill s and MainSpring, a homeless shelter that received $205,000; the Boys and Girls Club of Metro South, which received $115,000; and the Charity Guild, a food pantry that got $90,000. The best and most important solutions and the most sustainable solutions come from the community, said Nancy Kasen, vice president of community benefits at Beth Israel Lahey Health.

Hannaford Makes New Education Donations

Hannaford Supermarkets has announced a new round of donations designed to support education. The food retailer and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation earmarked $400,000 in donations to support virtual learning and after-school programs for families throughout New England and New York impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The donation will support the work of 20 child development non-profit organizations in their efforts to meet an increased level of need and provide expanded childcare programs to families during the pandemic, including full-day remote learning centers for students while their caregivers are at work.
