Share: COLOMBO (News 1st): Weather-related accidents caused by the prevailing inclement weather conditions, have so far claimed the lives of two and injured four others. Many houses were damaged following incidents of earth slips reported in Gasnewa, Kegalle; a 55-year-old male died after a mound of earth collapsed onto his home, News 1st correspondent said on Friday afternoon (May 14). Another female who sustained injuries in the same incident was admitted to the hospital. In the meantime, the remains of an individual who was swept away by floods on Thursday (May 13) as a result of heavy rains, were recovered on Friday morning (May 14).

Japan’s SBI Group invests USD 2 Mn in Watawala Dairy Farm May, 14, 2021 Capital infusion to help WATA expand the dairy business, drive sustainable fresh milk production in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka’s leading agribusiness company Watawala Plantations PLC (CSE: WATA) announced that SBI Ven Holdings (Pte) Limited, the overseas private equity firm of SBI Holdings Inc., has invested USD 2 million in Watawala Dairy Farm through Watawala Dairy Limited (WDL). The investment will further propel WATA’s dairy operations in the country and contribute to the economy by committing to the Government’s effort to promote local milk production and towards the goal of achieve self-sufficiency in milk. Furthermore, Watawala Plantations plans to utilise the investment to expand the herd (reach 1000 milking cows), further improve its infrastructure to function at optimal levels and to strengthen the upstream value chain.

COVID cases in the country exceed 1,000 for the second consecutive day

Thursday, 29 April 2021 - 17:11 The highest number of COVID cases in the country was reported yesterday (29) with a record of 1,466 cases. This is the second consecutive day that the number of patients reported in a day has exceeded 1,000. The highest number of patients were reported from the Colombo District, which was 228. Meanwhile, when PCR tests were conducted on 14 persons in Divulwewa, Anamaduwa, 12 of them had tested positive for the virus. A tense situation arose when the authorities decided to take measures to close the weekly fair. Four persons who obstructed the duties of Public Health Inspectors were also arrested.
