shepard: and everybody is checking strategy. next stop, new hampshire. a new year s day shooting leaves four people dead, including two navy pilots. my heart dropped. i didn t believe it. shepard: and a brother and sister among the victims. he was her rock. shepard: tonight the mystery murders of coronado, california. but first from fox this wednesday night, a dramatic shift in the political landscape as we look ahead to new hampshire s first in the nation primary. just hours after the iowa caucuses, two of the republican candidates made major announcements. i have no regrets, none whatsoever. we never compromised our principles and we can leave this race knowing that we ran it with utmost integrity. we made a very important contribution to this race. shepard: the minnesota congresswoman and tea party favorite, michelle bachmann, officially calling it quits after her sixth place finish in iowa. then there is the texas governor, rick perry, who played things a bi
he s technically there even though he didn t campaign really in iowa. he s spending all of his time in new hampshire. presumably he ll come in last. he won t drop out because he s doing all of his campaigning in new hampshire. but remember, this is very early right now. it s sort of coincides, this top tier w the most recent polls we saw, not only our cnn/time poll, the des moines register poll, an nbc/marist poll. these are the three individual, the top tier. no matter how you look at these entrance polls, you can think of it as the most recent poll in iowa. because this is a poll really. and it s a little bit more accurate presumably than the other polls because this is a poll that isn t of likely caucusgoers. we know these are real caucusgoers who participated in this poll, this entrance poll as we call it. the top tier will presumably getting more information in the next wave of these respondents, john. but significant with our most recent poll the des moines register
conservative convictions. what we need a less. less spending, less taxes, less regulation. megyn: and take on president obama in november. we don t need america to be transformed. we need to have america restored to the greatness we have always had in this country. bret: the battle for the republic nomination 2012. pg. live from des moines, iowa, this is america s election headquarters, the iowa caucuses. megyn: good evening, the iowa caucuses are getting underway right now. these are live pictures from two of the 1,774 caucuses across the state. bret: they all start with the pledge of allegiance then caucus goers pick a chairman and a secretary. people then deliver speeches on behalf of the candidates they are fighting for and then everyone in that room votes by secret ballot. now we don t have the results yet but we will learn the results officially together over the next three hours. and we will analyze them as they come in. megyn: we have complete coverage
romney. the ap said earlier, last hour i guess it was, that an announcement is eminent. so we will be keeping our eyes on that. in the meantime, we just got off the phone with the i think the democratic state party chair, davorksy in iowa, who i thought was extremely good television presence, who was talking about what the democrats were doing tonight on the other side, sort of using it as an organizational opportunity and highlighted the fact that the grass root energy that got a million articles written about it in 20008 when barack obama was the under dog and he needed to get every last delegate in every last state in order to unseat hillary clinton, that that infrastructure is still there. it s still very powerful. it s still very mobilized, even if we re not paying attention to it. you know, i think that the chairman s point, and, also, michelle s point about organization, is a very important one. i talked to a republican strategist and they were saying the underrepo
newt gingrich, 13%, rick perry, 10% and michele bachmann at 5%. let s go to chris matthews at the polk county convention center in des moines. rach, it looks like something could be developing which would be fascinating for the obama people and interesting for the republicans. the normal course of events is when you go on the attack against another opponent, for example, if gingrich is still part of this race coming in fourth tonight at a decent 13% after all that s happened, he goes out with a knife against romney this saturday night on the abc debate again and then on sunday morning with david gregory on meet the press in that debate and go after hammer and tongue all the issues of abortion, rip the scab off issue, if he does that who is the beneficiary? not newt. the beneficiary is santorum. and that s fascinating because that opens up the republican party like a cantaloupe then you have a situation where romney suffers from the fact that s been he ll be bleeding by
