August 1, 2019 was a big day for both Tony Gonzales and John Lira.
That afternoon, Will Hurd announced that he would not seek a fourth term representing U.S. District 23.
Hurd’s announcement meant political salvation for Gonzales. Only a day earlier, Gonzales, a Republican with 20 years of experience in the U.S. Navy, had declared his candidacy for U.S. District 35, a solid Democratic district represented by all-but-unbeatable Lloyd Doggett.
Hurd’s bombshell gave Gonzales an opening, a chance to pivot into a swing district that was up for grabs. Tirelessly covering every rural community across a sprawling district that stretches from South San Antonio to El Paso County, Gonzales pulled off an upset win last November over Democratic nominee Gina Ortiz Jones.
