I wish they’d show it from beginning to end. I wish Tesla would show the part where humans, with superior tools like their hands, assemble the dash board and the seats and other parts of the interior.
Here is a question to consider: Will Tesla move robots from Fremont to Austin Gigafactory because they are no longer needed with the single casting? Or, does Austin get all new robots? What will Tesla do with all those robots that are going to be replaced by Giga Presses? So far on this question we know that Tesla Gigafactory Texas has received the first parts of the Giga Press machines to be installed on the site. The parts come from IDRA, an Italian company and Tesla s manufacturing partner for the Giga Press.
Musk’s Remarks About Tesla Cybertruck Raise Doubts About Exoskeleton ++ He said development is complete, but that the truck will have parts made by a stronger die casting machine.
One of the most impressive things about the Tesla Cybertruck was that it would have a stressed-skin structure, also called an exoskeleton. Sandy Munro was talked about that in multiple videos. At Tesla’s Q4 2020 earnings call, Elon Musk raised doubts about that. According to him, the Cybertruck development is complete, and it will use a more powerful Giga Press to have its rear structure.
As we already explained back on June 5, 2020, IDRA Group supplies Tesla with Giga Presses. The one used for the Model Y is called OL 5500 CS HPDC, which stands for High-Pressure Die Casting. It has a clamping force of 5,500 tons. Musk seems to have rounded that up to 6,000 tons.
According to Musk, Tesla has also been producing 4680 cells on a test facility next to the Fremont plant for months. The volume is said to be very small so far, but it should be enough for some samples for Germany without any problems.
If the information from the Twitter observer is correct, Musk should mean business with his announcement that the German Model Y will be produced from the start with a cast rear and front frame and the 4680 battery sandwiched in between. This represents a significant production risk, Musk said in early October. On the other hand, it was reported at the beginning of December that cells for the Tesla electric car from Germany would initially be supplied by LG Chem. Therefore, Tesla s own production shouldn t be ready anytime soon.
