From Nov. 1 to Dec. 24, roughly 50 turkey experts with headsets and computers operate the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line call center in Chicagoland. Originally conceived as a PR stunt, the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line has now been around for more than four decades. It's become famous enough it warranted a long diversion on “The West Wing.” Barbara Robinson herself has been at the job for 16 years, and says it takes a special kind of person to guide addled consumers through these often-stressful holiday celebrations.

Make sure you have ample time to thaw a turkey, if using frozen, and don’t do it on the counter but instead in the fridge or in cold water. Then it takes at least three-and-a-half hours in the oven. Must-have items include a roasting pan, a meat thermometer, a sharp knife to carve the bird after resting and of course enough people to eat it all – Butterball recommends 1.5 to 2 pounds per person.
