There s a clear, scientific path to safely reopening schools. The real barrier now is politics. insider@insider.com (Aria Bendix) © LM Otero/AP Imagse Elementary-school students walk to classes in Godley, Texas, on August 5. LM Otero/AP Images Studies suggest schools can safely resume in-person learning if they rely on masks and distancing. But a few big political obstacles have made this difficult. Some districts don t enforce mask policies. Others lack funding to ensure a safe environment for teachers and staff. By now, research clearly supports the idea that schools can safely resume in-person learning in the US. A January study of 11 school districts in North Carolina identified just 32 coronavirus infections in schools over nine weeks. A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention detected minimal transmission among K-12 schools in Wood County, Wisconsin.

The education secretary is set to announce on 22 February that final-year students in practical subjects will be able to return to face-to-face teaching, with students taking other subjects expected to follow soon afterwards. But unions said as much tuition as possible should remain online for the rest of the academic year to put the safety of staff and students first.
