If you happen to be a non-human animal, chances are you’re not doing very well. Nonetheless, New Zealanders are becoming increasingly sensitive to welfare issues. Perhaps the biggest indication that attitudes are changing can be seen in our diets: according to research released last year, 15% of New Zealanders avoid meat most or all of the time. Policy is changing, too. The government recently announced that it is banning livestock exports by sea – albeit with a two-year ‘transition period’. Two days later, it launched an inquiry into greyhound racing, following welfare concerns.

New Zealand emissions rise as government vows urgent action

An increase in New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions is a step in the wrong direction towards the country’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, say experts, who have called on the government to bring in more radical action. The latest Greenhouse Gas Inventory, released by the minister for the environment on Tuesday, shows that both gross and net emissions increased by 2% in the 12 months to the end of 2019. The increase was predominantly driven.

Public health experts are raising alarm over Brazil this week, as the pandemic-hit nation has reached several grim coronavirus milestones, including a record number of deaths and the possible spread of multiple more-contagious variants. Brazilian authorities on Tuesday reported nearly 4,200 covid-19 deaths the country’s highest daily death toll since the pandemic began. The raging outbreak has been fueled by the virulent P.1 variant, and now scientists there say they have identified Brazil’s first case involving a similar, more transmissible variant discovered in South Africa.

Allan, the 37-year-old minister for conservation and civil defence, shared that she had stage-three cancer in a Facebook post on Tuesday, in which she wrote that she had felt uncomfortable about the invasive screening test. Experts and campaigners are now renewing a push for the government to introduce self-testing for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which causes almost all cervical cancer, as another path to regular screening.
