A few of the nonprofit organizations that asked for city subsidy funds this year are sitting on cash fund balances that grew by over $1 million in recent years, which played a role in the committee recommending to reduce city subsidy funds.
Among the most notable changes are increasing the Chamber of Commerce’s rent to $140,760 – an increase of about $20,000 from the previous contract – and the city collecting 5% of all gross sales over $750,000 from the Corn Palace gift shop
"If nobody does end up getting closer to our number, that seems like a viable option to work with Mitchell Area Housing Incorporated and get a single-family residential home built in that spot,” Mitchell City Council member Jeff Smith said of the future options of the lot
Leaders who support the Corn Palace staff taking over the summer gift shop say the revenue made from sales can bring the facility closer to operating without a deficit.
