Our Opinion: Luzerne County should bet big on tourism

The idea of moving the Luzerne County visitors bureau to White Haven, floated this week by state Rep. Gerald Mullery, is not as far-fetched as it might seem to Wilkes-Barre-centric county officials. Mullery makes a good point that White Haven sits near three major roadways — Interstates 80 and 81 and the Northeastern Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike — that are the main gateways to the region and three state parks that draw thousands of people per day in season, Lehigh Gorge, Nescopeck and Hickory Run. Those outdoor enthusiasts spend millions on food and lodging, equipment purchases and recreation each year, according to the state.

Mullery wants visitors bureau in White Haven, not W-B

State Rep. Gerald Mullery wants the county visitors bureau to move to the White Haven Community Library and Visitors Center rather than the former train station in downtown Wilkes-Barre. County council is considering a proposal to move Visit Luzerne County from a building on Public Square to the long-vacant train station property near Wilkes-Barre Boulevard. The renovation of the train station is scheduled to begin later this year. Council might vote on a proposed five-year lease agreement with Market Square Properties Development LLC, the owner of the property, on April 13. On Wednesday, Mullery, D-119, Newport Twp., sent council a letter in support of moving the visitors bureau to White Haven instead.

The change would allow hunters to apply online or in person wherever general hunting licenses are sold. As technology evolves, the Pennsylvania Game Commission believes it’s now time to simplify both the process and access to buy doe licenses. However, the County Treasurers Association of Pennsylvania feels there’s not a good system in place to move doe licenses away from the current practice involving the county treasurer offices.
